Q Does anyone know how to get a mailto url that has a hyphen in the domain name to work? i.e. mailto{0}-xx.com

I'd like to know this answer too!! - AaronSachs

Q:Error when saving

I am newbie. When I tried to edit homepage, I always get an error like below :

Exception processing topic change 2007-03-29-07-35-47.2365--127.0.0.1 - System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Valid values are between 0 and 999, inclusive.

at FileSystemStore.TopicChangeFromName(QualifiedTopicRevision topic) in c:\Builds\ccnet\server\flexwikicore-20\Working\build\EngineSource\FileSystemStore.cs:line 346

How I supposed to do to fix that ? FYI : Running on Windows XP, IIS 5, .NET version 2

Q: How often does someone from the team scan these pages and try to give quick answers?, it seems this page is of limited help at the moment due to the limited response time!

A: FlexWiki is sort of slow, though. Most of the people spend their time in the SourceForge site or writing code. If you check the recent pages, you'll notice that a week can go by with only test pages being added before someone comes along with substance to add to the wiki. Just be patient or take the questions to the SourceForge messageboard.

Q: Chris [2006-03-28]

I have a new Flexwiki install that I plan to use with SQL Server. Is there an easy way to migrate a file-based wiki into the new wiki?

Q: Pierre [2006-03-07]

I am trying to install FlexWiki on a machine that is currently running Windows 2003 with MS SQL2000. I have set up a SharePoint site first. I have done the SharePoint “Exclude path function” in SharePoint's administration page. The FlexWiki site never comes up. I feel that the problem is caused by SharePoint since I was successful loading FlexWiki on a non SharePoint machine with Windows XP. Is there an EASY way to get this thing running? Also I have read "How to enable an ASP.Net application to run on a SharePoint virtual server support number 828810. It did not work for me. Thanks for the help.

A: Pierre [2006-03-13]

FlexWiki does not work..(I believe at all) configured in a Virtual Directory with SharePoint. Instead create a New Web Site and use a new port setting such at 8080 or 8181. When you have completed the "Setup Wizard" your remote path to the site will be http://<YourServerName>:8181/default.aspx/MyWiki/HomePage.html or your local path (if you are typing at the server) http://localhost:8181/default.aspx/MyWiki/HomePage.html. Note this site was set using 8181 as the port address.

Q:

Is there any way to have complete customization of my FlexWiki pages layout? For instance, I want to modify the background colors, and move the "Edit" button to be within the center part of the page, not on the left border. I'm new to setting up and configuring this wiki, so any help will be appreciated.

A: NicoleHaagenson [2006-04-14]

Try the CustomBorders page. That will show you how to edit the four borders. For the background/text color you will need to edit your wiki_orig.css file. That should be located on your webserver under the FlexWiki folder. I love how the FlexWiki uses "lemonchiffon" as it standard color for its pages. Also, it is important to note that Mozilla will not reflect any changes that you make to this file regarding the colors. It will continue to use the lemonchiffon. I suggest you have your users use IE for viewing the wiki. I just changed the wiki.css file in the root wiki directory and refreshed Firefox and the color changed just fine. Perhaps your Mozille was using a cached copy? (Gideon 2006-05-27)

Q:

Suppose the installation is made to the directory c:\projects\flexwiki and the sub directory .\WikiBases has the permissions of the user the web site runs under. Does the user need read/write/execute/delete/modify permissions on the whole path c:\projects\flexwiki\wikibases or only .\wikibases? Currently I'm getting an "You do not have permission to change this topic." on my topics and the ConfigurationChecker says "Namespace (ProjectXY) not writable.", "System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "C:\projects\flexwiki\WikiBases\ProjectXY\testFile.txt" is denied.".

A:

So what do you think yourself? Are you really sitting there waiting until one of us tells you to go ahead and grant the ASPNET user access to those files?

Q:

My Flexwiki installation displays an error message when I try to save changes made in a particular file. The error message that is displayed on clicking the Save button is:

“Server Error in '/techwiki' Application”.

Here is the text of the error message:

“Runtime Error

Description
Details

I checked permissions for the folder and the particular file, and ASPNet user has modify rights. This error comes up both on the local host and remote machines.

We use integrated windows authentication in IIS. The wiki is set up on Win2k and IIS 5.1.

Can anybody tell me how this problem can be resolved?

Q: NEW! I am a new user of Flexwiki. I have installed Flexwiki on my local harddrive, and I am able to access the website. But if I try to access the same site from any other computer, I get an error which says "the page cannot be displayed". I have followed each instruction mentioned in the in this website very carefully. Can anybody tell me what is that I need to do to access my Flexwiki installation from other computers? I am working on a IIS 5.1, Win XP PC

A: Well, first off, which instructions in this website? Do you mean the QuickSetup? Try creating a simple HTML page (separate from FlexWiki), and accessing it from the other computer. If that fails as well, you're looking at a non-FlexWiki issue.

Q: NEW! Flexwiki has been set up and working fine on my Win2k with IIS5, we have created many namespaces and have a whole load of links/new topics. All seemed to be working fine. Except that clicking some of the links to topics gives this message Different Versions of this topic exist. Click to pick one. Any idea why this is happening. We do not have duplicate *.wiki files and are unable to figure out why such a message should be displayed.

Q: NEW! I`m an German User and Administrator. I found FlexWiki very nice and I use it in a Projekt. I translated many Topics, Borders and so on in German. But I did`nt found the point where I can translate the Text which appears on the Editor Page especially the Formatting Tips. Does anybody Knows how to translate ? I hope it`s not hard encoded.

Q: NEW! I am completely new to FlexWiki in two days, and I loved its basic concept. Excuse me to ask. The env is, FlexWiki 1.8.01677 binary with W2K3/IIS6,ASP. I made a change only with "namespace". When access inside LAN, such as 127.0.0.1 or others(192.168.1.x), it works fine though. At the same time, access from WAN (outside router), all of internal link is changed to above "LAN link". Therefore cannot display any pict or other relative link(404). It seem to be "first guy will be a winner" whether LAN or WAN, right after reboot IIS. Any advice?

A I make a responce to my own question. I tried with advanced version,1.8.01696 from SourceForge, it has been improved. However could not put local machine's pict onto neither left border or main text area. (had to choose to care one side whether is for LAN or WAN.) Or just make it external link. I wish next version support I could see the pict from both LAN and WAN simultaneously...like to put "relative-link" internally! ...well, this is updated info for above. I fixed the problem which is to modify "hosts" file to add global DNS, then, I have suceeded to access same conditions with same DNS from both WAN/LAN.

Q: NEW! Does FlexWiki support LDAP authentication, or is there any way to integrate that authentication into the product?

Q: NEW! Does FlexWiki work with 2.0 of the .Net Framework?

Q: NEW! How to include the content of local\remote file into the Wiki-page. Just to place some link to it like #include directive in C. Sorry for asking this, but I spend a lot of time searching this feature description in UserGuide, but unfortunately couldn't find it.

A: NEW! Michael (2006-03-27)

Have you tried {{PageName}}? See IncludeFormattingRules in the UserGuide, there is also information there on anomolous behavior.

Q: NEW! We have many users editing FlexWIKI pages, saving the changes, but unable to view the change on the site. If they wait a few hours, the changes are viewable. We are using SQL as the data repository. IE caching has been turned off to no avail. Any ideas?

A: I posted the same problem and the suggestion (which worked) was: go to the Admin page and clear the cache (of FlexWiki, not just the browser cache).

Q: NEW! I was creating a new website on Microsoft Front Page 2000. My site was saved and functioning. The next day my wife opened a new page and exited without saving. She was working with hyperlinks. The theme and borders are all messed up on my website. Is there anyway to get this back or is it lost forever? I tried everything to get it back and am not really sure what happened. I just know that the left side, top and bottom of my pages are all messed up. My logo is gone. I created tabs at the top of the page and they are gone. I had buttons on the left and they are now hyperlinks and the links at the bottom of the page have moved to the left of the web page with the rest of the hyperlinks. Please help! I would greatly appreciate any advice concerning this issue! Thank you in advance for your help!

Q: NEW! I want to create a link to a page and have the page open in a new browser window so that the back button on the browser for the main Wiki site does not have to be used. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks!!

Q: NEW! Can Topic Names have a '.' in them? (Example: Release 6.1) Everytime I try this name I get an error. Thanks!

A I don't think so. See WikiNamespace and ExoticTopicFormats for more information. -- JimmySieben 2005-08-23

Q: NEW! How can I embed an image in my wiki page? I can link to a non-secure image URL and have it appear in the wiki, but if I use a secure URL (https), then the image will not display and a link appears instead. - Anon (I would like to know too! - AaronSachs)

A: For the truly adventurous, modify the source code (FlexWiki 1.8.0.1696 Released 2005-12-02) as follows and rebuild:

Search for HTTPIMAGESOURCE, there will be two occurences in Formatter.cs: insert the following after line 1681

 str = Regex.Replace (str, @"([^""']|^)https(://\S*(?i:\.jpg|\.gif|\.png|\.jpeg))",
                      "$1<img src=\"HTTPSIMAGESOURCE:$2\"/>") ;

and the following after line 1914

 str = Regex.Replace (str, "HTTPSIMAGESOURCE::(//\\S*)", "https:$1");

If you look at the code it will be obvious where it should go. May fortune favor the foolish!! BillWheeler 4 Aug 2006

Q: NEW! I just installed DotNetNuke v3.0 and now FlexWiki won't work. The problem appears to be that both applications require their own unique Global.asx. Has anyone successfully integrated these two applications? Any ideas on where to look? Thank you in advance.

A: "Integrated"? Haven't tried. Installed on same web server? Yes. Don't try to place web applications in the same folder. Create them as individual web applications, each using a separate App Pool (in IIS6).

A: If you have FlexWiki under the DNN virtual directory there are a few steps that need to be taken.

1. First make sure that the FlexWiki virtual directory is setup as an application.

2. Then copy the follwing dll's from the DNN bin directory into the FlexWiki bin directory.

 DotNetNuke.HttpModules.DNNMembership.dll
 DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Exception.dll
 DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Personalization.dll
 DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewrite.dll
 DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UsersOnline.dll
 MemberRole.dll
 FreeTextBox.dll

3. Finally, add the following code to the web.config in the <system.web> node.

 <httpModules>
         <remove name="UrlRewrite" />
         <remove name="Exception" />
         <remove name="UsersOnline" />
         <remove name="ProfilePrototype" />
         <remove name="AnonymousIdentificationPrototype" />
         <remove name="RoleManagerPrototype" />
         <remove name="DNNMembership" />
         <remove name="Personalization" />
 </httpModules>

Q: NEW! I'm often getting "Error evaluating expression: No such property or function: federation" on random pages on my wiki (running Build 1.8.0.1613 on IIS6 on W2K3). To fix it, I have discovered that clearing the cache from one of the admin pages fixes the problem for a short while. Googling isn't finding much on this issue, but it's causing us problems. Any suggestions, or a way to turn off caching?

Q: NEW! I am getting the text NormalBorders#LeftBorder(1:1) : No such property or function: federation replacing the left hand menu text for a page. It is only one page but I no longer have any menu options. The page had been working for several days before it decided to misbehave. How can I fix this?

Q: NEW! How can I insert an image as a relative url? I can copy images to a subdirectory off my WikiBase, and insert them with the full url. But an url like images/myfile.gif won't work.

Q: NEW! Where are my topic files? My wiki seems to work OK. I created a few topics, which I am able to view, but I don't see them in the WikiBases namespace folder where I thought they would be. On a related note, the home page wiki file in the namespace folder just has one line of text and doesn't look anything like the actual home page. Is the actual content hidden away with my topics?

A: The WikiBases folder contains a folder for each of your namespaces. Each namespace folder contains the .wiki files, as well as the .awiki (archived) files.

Q: NEW! I installed a FlexWiki on w2k server and a see a null word over the about text in upper right corner of page. Does anyone know how to remove or replace nasty null?

A: Edit your _ContentBaseDefinition topic, and add a line containing a Description property:

        Title: MyWiki
        Description: Welcome to myWiki
        Namespace: MyWiki

Q: NEW! Can Flexwiki be used as a collaboration tool for MS Word and MS Excel If so, can anybody explain how to go about it

A: No. Use Windows SharePoint Services, which is included with Windows Server 2003.

Q: NEW! I think this question has probably been asked a bunch but I haven't seen a definitive answer yet. I want to create links to topics with spaces in the links AND I would like the topic listed at the top of the resulting pages to have spaces in them as well. I want to create a link that reads "Topic With Spaces" such that when I click on it, the page I jump to has a topic at the top of the page that reads "Topic With Spaces".

If I click the Topic Bar at the top of a page and enter a new topic "Topic With Spaces" a new page created which is brought up in edit mode for content to be added. This new topic or page has "Topic With Spaces" at the top which is exactly what I want to see. The problem is that it seems to now exist in the namespace as an orphan with no other pages linking to it. How can I then link to it from other pages?

I think the question below is asking the same thing and the method described in the answer given doesn't work for me either because it would result in a page with a topic of "TopicWithSpaces" which isn't what I want to see.

A: Create your link like this: Topic With Spaces

Create your topic with the name TopicWithSpaces, then enter this as the first line inside the new topic:

:Title: Topic With Spaces

Q: NEW! I tried to make an internal link like link , but with a blank in it. ( like link text ). This link is not recognized by FlexWiki, and I do not want to set it up like an external link ( "link text":http://somewhere.com/default.aspx/etc. ), because the link has to work independently from the server's IP and DNS name. Any suggestions? Is there a possibility of making 'arbitrary links' redirecting inside the Wiki? Tobias

A1: Try this "link text":NormalLink or "link text":[Link] . Example Link

Follow-up: Thanks, but my problem is, the [Link] will not work, because the Wiki Page it should direct to has a blank in its name.

A2: Don't create topic pages with blanks in the name. Rather, create a topic called "ExampleLink", and add a title property inside the topic:

        :Title: Example Link

A3: New! NicoleHaagenson [2006-04-14]

You could also try using %20 in place of the space (i.e. file:///T:/Help%20Me/Wiki%20Help.pdf to reference a file called Wiki Help, in the Help Me folder on the T: drive). As you can see, I use it all the time to reference network files.

Q: NEW! Will the regular internal search robots pick up content hosted on this WiKi? this could greatly enhace its success and usability. I'm trying to use FlexWiKi as my primary community vehicle between our group and the Microsoft field.

A: You mean the Microsoft Search service? It's file-based, and will index your .wiki files (raw data), not the transformed web pages. You need something to index your WikiWeb.

Q: I'm working to help set up a flexwiki to help support electronic theses and dissertations. Should I point readers to the User Manual here or should I copy the User Manual to the other site? I hate repetition but I also fear creating confusion because the site (http://flexwiki.etdguide.org/default.aspx) looks like this one... I'm not clear on the ethics of this given the wiki way and the MSFT Terms of Use link and so on JoeMoxley.

Q: NEW! In the WikiTalkExpression topic one of the definitions of an expression is "a reference to a variable," and while the format of a variable name is described below that, the actual declaration and usage of a WikiTalkVariable is not. Are variables in WikiTalk just another name for function parameters? If not, how are they declared and assigned new values? (I mean, how can it be called a variable if you can't change it?) What issues of variable scope are there?

Q: NEW! I have just copied the upgrade files for 1.8.0.1677 over the top of my wiki. The wiki appears to work, but the sidepanels do not. In their place I receive the following error:

 Error evaluating expression: Method Clear in type FlexWiki.UnitTests.MockFederationCache
 from assembly FlexWiki.UnitTests, Version=1.8.1613.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null
 does not have an implementation.

This error appears on both sides of my screen. What should I be doing that I'm not? -- ScottRansom 2005-03-28

3/29/2005: Answered my own question. Apparently just copying the new files over the top of the old files is not sufficient. It looks like there are some old development dlls in the bin folder that are the cause of the problem. Cleaning out the bin folder first, then copying the new files there, fixed the problem. -- ScottRansom 2005-03-29

Q: NEW! My internal environment uses urlScan and I'm having trouble with the hyperlinks as urlScan blocks any dot notation in the URL. At this stage, my IT dept is reluctant to alter the urscan.ini to allow this. Is there a code modification to flexwiki that can overcome this urlScan setting?

And: Related comment Many (if not all) WPP hosts will not modify urlscan.ini to allow dots in path names, since the setting is global to all webs on the server. I would like to encourage the developers to find a way to make FlexWiki work in these environments, or encourage the developers working on URLScan to fix it so it is a bit more sophisticated in its 'dot' rejection. Otherwise, FlexWiki will never gain wide acceptance outside the corporate LAN / WAN environment...

Q: NEW! When I try to subscribe to the RSS feed on my wiki it tries to authenticate me, yet no matter what credentials I give it it does not let me subscribe. How do I set it up so there is no authentication? +1 on this question.

A: try puting this into your web config (thanks Craig :

        <location path="rss.aspx">
          <system.web>
            <authentication mode="None" />
            <authorization>
              <allow users="*" />
            </authorization>

Q: NEW! Hi, Is there a way of displaying the differences between to different versions of the same topic that are not the latest and the latest minus 1 i.e. 2 arbitary versions that maybe several versions apart. I've tried looking through the WikiTalk docs however I cant get the TopicArrayInfo Difference to work ( and I'm not sure if its what I need anyway), any suggestions anyone??

Q: NEW! I really like the design of www.patternshare.org especially the way there is a seperate 'discussion' tab for each topic. How did they do this? - Marc

A: They've apparently customized the code. Look at the querystring when you click 'discussion': ?discussion=y

Q: NEW! I installed the binary version of the software and have made no customized changes other than to add a different namespace. My problem is two-fold. Within the edit screen, using Firefox, it doesn't hold the right border and instead of a CR, the text continues to the right. With IE, the text wraps correctly while editing, but using either browser to view the saved page, the text again doesn't wrap correctly. I'm writing this using Firefox and have a scroll bar off the right border, but on mine, that does not show.

Q: NEW! Is there a way to make a comment in the edit-page, but that will not show on the normal page. Something like: <!-- comment --> or // comment , /* comment */ -- JHWester [2005-04-27]

A: :Comment: place your comment here

Q: NEW! I'd like to use FlexWiki for an internal project. How can I control access using Security Groups? -- RussSan 09MAY05

Q: NEW! I'm very new to flexwiki. I am trying to add an upload capability to my company's flexwiki site. I have already added the two upload files (Upload.aspx and Upload.aspx.cs). I'm basically stuck on this step. I tried copying the Normal Borders Right Only With Upload2 and I got an error. After this didn't work I began trying to use the NormalBorders code just to see if it would work. I keep getting the same error: "Error evaluating expression: Parsing error evaluating topic member RightBorder defined in TDWiki.NormalBorders: Expected comma ','; got TokenEndOfInput: ''" I can't figure out where to fix this. Is this code not meant to simply be copied and pasted? Or am I missing some key element?[25MAY05]

Q: NEW! I see that there are some special features that are only available for build 1699 and later but all I can find on the SourceForge.Net is 1696, Where can I get the binaries (and source) for build 1699? (I'd like to know too 14/11/2006 )

Q: NEW! Could you please post somewhere what new features and bug fixes will FlexWiki 2.0 have?

Wiki administration questions

Q NEW! How I can move my Wiki to a brand new computer after Flexwiki instalation?

Q NEW! How do I turn on the administration features of my wiki? When I navigate to the admin folder I get the message "Implement later when working on the admin portion of the website."

Q Newsletter daemon keeps restarting.

A Something I discovered is that it could be permissions of App Pool that flexwiki is running under. The daemon thread runs in the background but it takes on the App Pool identity and not the impersonation identity. If you are using things like a TrustedConnection then the account needs to have access to the database. I suspect this is the same for file based storage – BartFibrich

Q Is it possible changing the behavior of the print site in the manner that alle links points to ...print.aspx instead of default.aspx. With that behavior it would be possible getting all the content into a *.PDF file with Adobe Acrobat ! thanks

A Nice idea! See RequestingFlexWikiChanges.

Q I downloaded the source and built it. I then went through the procedure to set up the virtual directories and it runs fine on my dev box. Now, how can I deploy it to an IIS server? Thanks.

A: Did you mean you went through InstallingFlexWiki? -- WouterCX

Z No, I mean I downloaded the source files, made the couple of virtual directory changes, and then built everything in the solution. That basically gives me a working development system. I was wondering if there was a prescribed way for me to then build the required virtual directories and copy the required files to another machine (the non-development server). For example, a build script that created a copy of the FlexWiki Binaries Zip or the Update zip from my development project tree would be nice. -- dwrogers

Q topic name seems not support any other languages except english . when i trying to create page with korean or japanease topic, runtime error occurs. did i missed something?

Q: I installed the FlexWiki on my PC, but I got the warn message "You do not have permission to change this topic." on the top right side of page when I was going to edit, How can I solve it? thanks

A: 1. Look at InstallationProblems 2. Check if the .WIKI / .AWIKI files are read-only. 3. Check if ASP.NET Machine Account has Modify rights on WikiBases directory and below.

Q: How can I add a new namespace by editiing the "NamespaceMap.xml"? thanks

A: 1. Create a new directory under \WikiBases, for example Test 2. Create the file _ContentBaseDefinition.wiki under this directory 3. Change the contents of _ContentBaseDefinition.wiki. Example:

 Namespace: Test
 Contact: test
 Title: test
 Description: test

4. Under <Namespaces> in the NamespaceMap.xml , add a line <Namespace Root=".\WikiBases\Test" Secure="false" Namespace="Test" />

Q: I 'd like to to use <authentication mode="Forms" /> instead of <authentication mode="Windows" />, Can you tell me how to change the web.config to make it work? thanks

Q: I recently upgraded my FlexWiki, and now when I try to edit, I get a javascript error "PreviewArea is Undefined".

Q: I have installed in the root and set up a VD to the site. it works fine if i use localhost, but if I use the machine name, whilst the page renders OK ,all the links on the page are rendered to point at localhost except for the "show changes", etc on teh left. It means that no one else can use the site. I am using teh current version. DCW 14/10/2004

I too have same issue all liks on left pane come as localhost on other machine. They do not get replace with hostname.

I have this same problem with localhost being used even though I hit the site with the machine name, has it been solved? I'm using IE6, all updates, etc. - 11/24/2004

A: I had this same problem until i moved the FlexWiki folder to c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\FlexWiki. Moved it there and changeed the path the virtual directory uses and it works fine now. AndyB | 01.24.05

This still does not work for me. I did exactly what AndyB did. I have the latest version 1.8.0.1677. Any other ideas.

Q: On my installation, whenever I try to save an edit I keep getting a JavaScript error on the page. It must be something to do with my installation as I can make changes here (Obviously). The error I am getting is "document.all is not a function" in wikiedit.aspx Line 42. Any help would be appreciated. RoyCorneloues, 30 September 2004

Update: Thanks for your answers. I am using IE5.5 and above. The problem also occurs in Firefox. I know this because I used the JavaScript console to track down the problem. It must be a config problem somewhere. I am using a sub-domain http://wiki.insightexec.com/ to host the Wiki. Also it can't be a client problem as I can update this entry in IE...

A: I had the same problem when I installed FlexWiki under C:\Flexwiki and made a virtual directory called "wiki". I changed it to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\flexwiki and the javascipt no longer occurs. -- BrianRiviere, 2 October 2004

A: This could quite likely be due to incompatibility between your browser and FlexWiki. Much of the UI script for FlexWiki is IE specific, though it now seems to work pretty well with Firefox. What browser are you using? -- DavidOrnstein

A: I think i had a similar problem, when I had a topic "open for editing" on both Wikies - flexwiki.com and the local one. Closing and reopening the other one helped -- Moses Stupka [2004-10-29]

Q: I have just installed FlexWiki on a Windows2000 web server, and it is all up and running fine, except for one thing. When you visit the wiki, an 'Enter Network Password' dialog box pops up. The funny thing is, you must've already been authenticated because the page has already rendered, including your username, in the top right-hand corner. If you cancel the dialog, you get the same behaviour as if you fill it in, so it seems to be completely superfluous, but I can't understand how to turn it off. Q: How do I put a wiki name in a link label (that I don't want to be a Wiki name). Putting the quotes in screws it up. E.g. I don't want either of these. :

MbUnit

MbUnit{1}

I want Mbunit but with the correct casing.

-Seconded: ben (at) bssc.edu.au

A: You could hack it with a space at the end of the link label eg MbUnit

Q: How do I link to a document if the path I need to use has spaces in it, e.g. O:\Projects\Lms Team\Reports Development\Minutes\Minutes_100104.doc I can get it to work w/o the spaces, but of course, that doesn't return the document. Q: I have heard that there is either a utility or some kind of support for automated database diagram generation. I have searched the net and not found anything about this. Q: Is it possible to user special characters like ë in a TopicName? Why doesn't that work? -- IvoDiepstraten

Q: Does the _NormalBorders page for each namespace still work with the new binaries? I am trying to get the original right side wiki pane back as described by SimonSchmid, without any luck. The problem I am having is with the tile-title gif. I am not able to figure out how to get it on the screen. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I like the new ways much better. Great concept! -- Anon., 10 May 2004

A: Yes, _NormalBorders works today. See CustomBorders for more information. -- DavidOrnstein

Q: why can't I create a new page with another language, e.g., Korean?

I am trying to create new page with a Korean language title. When I do that, the edit page is broken: there is no "Save" button. Of course I can create new page with an English title and I can use korean language in page content.

Does FlexWiki only support English, or did I miss something? Any suggestions? -- Anon., 1 June 2004

A: No, it supports more than just English (see, for example, WikiWikiPolyglot)

Q: I just updated to the new release. I don't seem to be able to get the title I specified in _ContentbaseDefinition.wiki to appear on the left, or anywhere else for that matter. What is shown here as FlexWiki on this site (top-right), just never shows up. I resolved it (partly) by using the description as title. Am I missing something? -- René de Vries (mailto:rene@kex.nl), 22 April 2004

I'm having the same issue. Since upgrading to build 1.0.1569.26481, The Homepage link (top right) has disappeared from our Wiki, and I'd like to add a link equivalent to the FlexWiki link on this site (top-right). How do I do this? -- DavidBeer

Q: How do I limit the number of items in the RSS feed for a wiki? I notice that the feed for this site ( http://flexwiki.com/rss.aspx?namespace=FlexWiki ) contains a modest number of entries, but the feed for my site ( http://www.3leaf.com/wiki/rss.aspx?namespace=Burton ) contains every entry that's been changed since I started it. Q: I seem to have created an InfiniteLoop by redirecting a page to itself somehow. It all started when I renamed the page. How can I break the loop? -- Anon., 18 June 2004

A: You can click on the topic at the top of any page and type in a WikiName to go to that page quickly. When you do this on a redirected page will take you to page containing the RedirectProperty and you will be able to edit the page to correct the problem. Note: after a few seconds (5 or 10?) the page will then try to redirect, so you'll want to start editing the page promptly. -- StuartCelarier, 10 August 2004

Q: Is it a normal chain of events to add a link to a new page, edit the new page with (substantial) content, and return to the original page only to find the new content is not recognized unless you edit and save the first page the link was defined on? -- BrianSchkerke (mailto:bmschkerke@charter.net)

A: No that's not the normal behavior, but it depends on how you "return" to the original page. If you use the Back button in your browser, your browser will go back to a copy of the page that it has cached locally (i.e., the old page). Refreshing the page (e.g., press F5 in IE) will get a new copy of the page from the server. -- StuartCelarier, 10 August 2004

Q: Should new additions to this page be placed at the top or bottom of the page? -- 28 March 2004

A: Good question. I have started adding some structure to this page to provide some guidance on this. Put new questions in the "Questions awaiting help" section near the top of this page with most recent first, so they are quickly spotted by those who can help. -- StuartCelarier, 5 August 2004

Question: I am using FlexWiki and can't spot any obvious way to generate a navigation structure for the resulting pages. Surely this is something that's pretty important? Anyone know the way this is supposed to work? Currently I've got a load of pages, and have to manually maintain a contents page, which is a pain.

Answer: You can add a site index using

 @@TopicIndex("Title", ".*", "<namespace>")@@

with <namespace> replaced with your namespace. On one wiki I created a page called SiteIndex containing only that code.

More generally, let me encourage you to think about wiki differently. A wiki is usually not a book (with at least one notable exception.) A book leads the reader through a single, linear path through the contents. In a wiki, the reader follows a line of thought by following links, offering multiple paths through the content. If the content is sufficiently well-linked, there should be little need for detailed navigational aides. A coarse-grained set of starting places usually suffices. This also allows the organization of the wiki to change fluidly over time, which is another important aspect of wiki. -- StuartCelarier, 5 August 2004

Q: When navigating through pages, you find one that your interested in, add to it as necessary, then if you want to go back a few pages, you end up having to 'back button' through all previous the pages including the edit pages and now out of date versions. A navigation system would be good here.

A: As one of the programmers that works on FlexWiki, I'm not sure how such a thing would even be written. Since any page can link to any other page, what sort of navigation could we provide beyond a straight list of all pages? And if that's what you want, you can already get it with available WikiBehaviors. -- CraigAndera [2004-08-02]

User input: How about a cookie that stores the names of the last 10 pages visited? Show those in a Navigation Bar to the lower left. It's not exactly what he wants but it's close and it would have a minimal performance hit. -- JustinCollum, 21 Aug 04

Rejoinder: Ah, OK, I understand better now. I was thinking more in terms of "build a map of the wiki" not "where have I been on this wiki". The latter is more achievable. If this is something that's important to you, log a FeatureRequest. Then, if you have the requisite knowledge, implemenent the feature. Or start bugging someone to develop it if you don't. -- CraigaAndera [2004-08-21]

Q: Why does the the engine seem to want NamespaceMap.xml in the root folder and the admin folder? When I place it in the root the config page tells me it's missing:

You specified a federation configuration file, but it can't be found. Given your current settings, this file must be present at C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wiki\admin\NamespaceMap.xml and be a valid federation configuration file.

The setup instr that I read said put it in the site root. I don't see anyway to tell the site where it should look for the namespace map.

Addendum I see that the location of NamespaceMap.xml is located in the web.config (which is the most sensible place). If my wiki is working how come the config pages aren't?

A: Changed my web.config entry to: <add key="FederationNamespaceMapFile" value="~\NamespaceMap.xml" />. Before it was ./NamespaceMap.xml. The problem here was that I pulled the web.config from a "known working setup" page on the FlexWiki site. -- JustinCollum

Q: Is there a formatting rule to make Flexwiki not make a pascal lastname (Jim McDoe) flexwiki-ized (with lines under the name)

A: Use two double-quotes, like this:

 My name is Jon ""McDoe""

Q: Where do I click for the Formatting Tips? They don't appear to be clickable.

A: They are clickable in IE. The script that makes this happen does not work in Mozilla/Opera so if you are using one of those products they will appear to not work.

A: They are clickable as of version 1677.

Searching

Q: Is it for particular user possible, who have limited rights to search over different namespaces (All)? Ary[02.05.2006]

Q: What is a RelativeTopicName? Why might a Topic not have a Namespace? -- OmarShahine

A: A topic would never have a relative name. The RelativeTopicName class is used in places within the engine when a relative topic name might need to be represented. For example, if I have wiki text that talks about my My HomePage, that reference is parsed out and handled as a RelativeTopicName until it's made absolute through lookups in the current namespace (and imported namespaces). -- DavidOrnstein

Q: Is it possible to change the "<title>" of a page, as used for bookmarks, without changing the Title of a wiki page? For example, on a new wiki, the home page is called "Home Page", but that requires manual renaming when you bookmark because it's too generic. On the other hand, you don't necessarily want to rename the Home Page from "Home Page" because it changes how the wiki is ref'ed within the wiki. Also I found when I tried to change my Home Page to the full path "Microsoft.Projects.Robots.HomePage", I got a "name already used" error.

What would be nice would be a way to change the <title> tag independently of what the label at top of the page is, i.e. separate these two concepts. At least, make it optional.

A1: It seems that this is really most useful for the My HomePage rather than for all pages. What if, for the My HomePage, there's an additional string added to the <title> element. It could be pulled from the WikiBase configuration or just be the TopicNamespace. -- TommyWilliams

A2: We could add a new WikiPageProperty called 'Title' which lets you specify a more human friendly title for a page. This could be used when generating the <title> (and maybe even as the heading on the page). -- DavidOrnstein

My observations: (1) Yes it is an issue, but the workaround is very easy, has to be done in plenty of situations with web pages that aren't wikis, and the issue doesn't occur all that frequently for the majority of wiki users. (2) I am already making extensive use of the Title WikiPageProperty on my wiki to contain the actual title of an article or book being referenced; redefining the property to mean the title displayed by the browser's title would not be compatible with my existing use. If a WikiPageProperty is used for this, please use a highly distinctive name like BrowserTitle. (3) This sounds like a feature request to me. Okay to move it to SuggestedEnhancements? -- StuartCelarier, 12 August 2004

Q: I'm having trouble adding a link to David Ornstein's profile by using the external reference link method described in the formatting tips section.

I have @flexWiki=http://www.flexwiki.com/default.aspx/$$$

included at the top of page, but whenever I try and point to FlexWiki.DavidOrnstein it barfs and says Failed to find InterWikisTopic _InterWikis ???

Other External topics seem to work fine elsewhere on the flexwiki site such as FlexWikiFaq . Appreciate any help -- ashepp@microsoft.com

Workaround: I think I found a workaround but it doesn't seem ideal. I essentually created did the following at the top of the page :

  @flexWiki=http://www.flexwiki.com/default.aspx/$$$
  @flexWikisub=http://www.flexwiki.com/default.aspx/FlexWiki.$$$

and referenced Davids name with Failed to find InterWiki 'flexWikisub'. this seems cloogy (that's 'kludgy', my friend) though....what is the better method? Can I define it globally? Thanks -- Adam (ashepp@microsoft.com)

A: Try using the InterWikiBehavior instead. You can define a global, external link pattern (such as @flexWiki=http://www.flexwiki.com/default.aspx/$1) in your _InterWikis topic and then use that from anywhere else on the site like this:

        @@InterWiki("flexWiki", "David Ornstein", "DavidOrnstein")@@

which would then display like this: David Ornstein

Wiki administrator questions

Q: In my installation (version 1.0.1569.26481 upgraded from 1.0.1515) Newsletters do not include wiki.css again. Moreover, it happens that the Newsletter "UpdateFrequency" property is shown as a link (black color instead of blue one using standard wiki.css)...

I get also many copies of the same newsletter (b.t.w. this happens also with Flexwiki...) Did I miss something, any suggestion? Thanks. -- Alvaro Busetti (mailto:a.busetti@tsf.it), 27 April 2004

A: Since UpdateFrequency is a WikiWord, it showing as a link is expected behavior. The color is likely due to the fact that it's also a property name; you should be able to change this by creating a StylesheetOverride and adding the appropriate CSS. As for the rest, newsletters currently have many bugs: this is something that needs serious looking at. I will probably take on a redesign of the newsletter functionality sometime in the next few months if no one beats me to it. -- CraigAndera [2004-08-13]

Q: I'm running an earlier version of FlexWiki (flexwiki.dll is 1.0.1569.26481) - when we try to use the wiki over https, many of the wiki links still refer to http. Is this a bug requiring an upgrade, or am I missing a configuration option somewhere? -- Anon., date unknown

A: I believe 1569 is the current version, so I think what you're seeing is a bug. Please enter a WikiDefect if you haven't already. -- CraigAndera [2004-08-13]

Q: Is there a way to limit the entries that are displayed on the Recent Changes page? I'd like "recent" to mean something, either in terms of time span or number of pages listed. Is there a configuration setting somewhere? -- StuartCelarier, 5 August 2004

A: I haven't searched through the source for the authoritative answer, but I believe the answer is "you can't". Ordinarily, I would follow this with "So how would you like to volunteer to fix it?" but that's obviously not an option until we get the project posted somewhere people can actually work on it. -- CraigAndera [2004-08-13]

Q: Newsletters do not include wiki.css, resulting in "flat" view of the newsletters. Any suggestion? --a.busetti@tsf.it

A: This bug has been fixed in the source code that is checked in but not yet released. It should start working in the next release. In the interim, the workaround is to put the wiki.css file into the root of the web server: the code is using the absolute path /wiki.css for the stylesheet path right now, rather than the relative path wiki.css. -- CraigAndera Date? Status?

Q: I am having trouble anytime I try to use the '.' notation to reference a subtopic with a page. i.e. I'd like to be able to display the summary info for a the topic 'AdamsInformation' by using the

This doesn't seem to work. Do I need to setup some kind of federation with the www.flexwiki site? How do I do this? --Adam (mailto:ashepp@microsoft.com)

A: Are you getting 404 errors? I had problems like this, and it turns out that URL Scan was rejecting the requests. They should show up in server logs and URL Scan logs. In the urlscan.ini file change a line at the top to say AllowDotInPath=1; if 1, allow dots that are not file extensions and restart IIS.

Note: I had to restart the whole server not just IIS before the changes took effect. Only put the following line AllowDotInPath=1; if 1, allow dots that are not file extensions if does not exist. In my urlscan.ini it was already there so all i did was to change it to 1. -- JasonJ

Related question

Q: It seems that my IIS 5.x (Windows 2000 Advanced Server) doesn't like the periods (dots) in the awiki file, created every time I change something in a wiki topic. Any suggestions? Thanks Max

A: Here's a suggestion, check your urlscan log. Urlscan is likely the culprit. As noted in one of the answers above, "...In the urlscan.ini file change a line at the top to say AllowDotInPath=1; if 1, allow dots that are not file extensions and restart iis." -- 7 July 2004

Q: Yes, but this can't be done in a shared server environment - most WPPs won't make this change, meaning that many people cannot use FlexWiki even though the server is capable of running .Asp.NET apps. FlexWiki should be capable of working with AllowDotInPath=0 if you want to see wider usage.

Q: I followed all the instructions in the setup to set this up on my server, but I seem to get a lot of: "Key cannot be null. Parameter name: key " server errors. Is this a common problem - can someone point out what I'm doing wrong!!

A1: I experienced the same problem yesterday. My problem was keeping my folder names in sync with my namespaces. For example, I had Test and Test.Subspace and namespaces setup. To do this correctly, my folders needed to be named .\Test and .\Test.Subspace, respectively. (IE I couldn't put Subspace in the Test folder.) -- although you probably could if you set the properties correctly.

Also make sure that you have the _ContentBaseDefinition.wiki file in each WikiBase. I believe this file needs to be present as well.

A2: When you have trouble getting things working, you should use the ConfigurationChecker. It won't find every problem, but it will find many. -- DavidOrnstein

Q2: I have the same issue when trying to preview an edit from remote. Locally, all is good, but remote fails. Ideas? - Thanks MarkPeterson

Q: Is there a workaround for hard-coded backslashes in ContentBase.cs? I've been trying to get FlexWiki running under Mono on Linux (just for kicks). It seems like it should work, the only problems I've had thus far are with paths. ContentBase.cs has some hardcoded backslashes which mean that the ContentBaseDefinition file can't be found on Linux. I get the following:

The namespace MyWiki is listed in the federation configuration, but it's definition topic is missing. The definition topic is the wiki topic that contains configuration information about the namespace and its ContentBase. The system looked for this topic file (./MyWiki\ContentBaseDefinition.wiki), but couldn't find it._

I've tried monkeying around with the path (adding backslashes to the filename etc) with no luck. Any ideas how I can get around this, or if there are any changes that could be made to accomodate Mono (purely so I can muck around some more )? -- Anon., 19 July 2004

A: Well, if you want to make the code changes, then use System.IO.Path.Combine. People who write code that combines paths using string concatenation instead of this wonderful API should be slapped briskly! -- CraigAndera [2004-07-21]

A2: I want to take a moment to say that even on NTFS, the file handling can lead to errors. It really does need to route through System.IO (I am working on the changes, and will contribute a patch for this).

First, when using Apache you have a case sensitivity issue on both Windows and Linux systems. You need to use mod_rewrite to correct for this. As a side note, you can run into this with IIS also -- IIS prefers an exact match, including case, to a match with different case. NTFS supports files that differ only by case, it just isn't common to find such files (typically created by applications running under the POSIX subsystem or under Cygwin).

Secondly, when running under a POSIX or compatible operating system, such as Linux, the backslash will be incorporated into the file name. As it turns out, everything still works because it is consistantly wrong, so it isn't really a big deal.

As I said, I'm working on a patch to correct all of this. For security reasons (to impair replacement attacks), even for IIS, it is important to capitalize URLs consistantly. Otherwise someone can dump an aspx file in with the same name (but different in case) and replace the functionality with anything they like. Similarly, it is important to use System.IO to manipulate paths, for security reasons.

Q: I am having trouble getting access to Visual Studio and wondering if there was another way to get the FlexWiki binaries with additional TopicIndexBehavior and _TopicTemplate features contributed by RyanLaNeve

()Thanks in Advance Marvin@surfbc.ca

A1: Currently, GDN is the only location to get the source-code for FlexWiki. It's certainly possible to build the binaries using the C# command-line compiler, though I've never done it myself. You would still need to join GDN, request to join the FlexWiki project and then manually download the source-code. Not exactly a snap, but the only option right now. -- RyanLaNeve

A2: The FlexWiki source code is moving to SourceForge soon. In the meantime, source code for build 1569 is available at http://wangdera.com/craig/public/flexwiki.zip . I will be happy to help people merge their changes back into the main code when we get the SourceForge site up and running. -- CraigAndera [2004-08-02]

Q: Are there any scripts or utilities that would assist with the migration of an OpenWiki wiki to FlexWiki? We have a large well established corporate OpenWiki that we wish to migrate, as OpenWiki has not been updated since 2002 and FlexWiki now offers a lot of features we'd like to take advantage of (in particular integration with VS.Net documentation). OpenWiki uses an Access database to store pages and as I understand it FlexWiki is entirely file based. Of course it wouldn't be hard to write a migration script, but I'm a lazy man and if it's been done already I'd rather avoid the task. Thanks. -- Craig, 27 May 2004

Q3: I got this error too, is there any solution yet? thanks -- Steve wangshuny@yahoo.com Nov.17,2004

A: I got this too but only on some pages. I went through teh admin section and had a look but the only thing that fixed it was to re extract the site and drop in my backed up wikibase. DCW 14/10/2004

A2: For VisitorEvents, see InstructionCard. The WikiTalk language (macro language used in FlexWiki) has a VisitorEvents object defined but only on this server. This may be a new feature though I can find no documentation on when it was added. Searching for features or bug reports related to this object on SourceForge and on this site results in with no information. -- TimSmith 2004-11-12

This may be a new feature though I can find no documentation on when it was added. Searching for features or bug reports related to this object on SourceForge and on this site results in with no information. Is this a new feature and if so, any timeline? -- TimSmith 2004-11-12

Q: I just installed this wiki server and things seem to work ok except the links to the wiki FAQ etc on the front page... if you click them you get 'Server Error in '/' Application' ... and i've seen this happen on other peoples wiki server's too... what's up with this?

A Looks to me like the topics have moved or been renamed on the FlexWiki site since the links were added to the build version.

A I ran into the same thing. Edit your home page and change the definition of "@flexwiki" to be "@flexWiki=http://www.flexwiki.com/default.aspx/FlexWiki/$$$"

Q Is anyone currently working on a version for use on Linux servers?

A Not that I'm aware of - FlexWiki is tied pretty closely to ASP.NET. But there are plenty of other fine Wiki implementations for Linux. Just Google for them!

Q I canont rename pages. The error says This topic can not be renamed (it is probably a backing topic). . I'm not sure what this means, and it makes the pages unavailable after the attempt. How do I fix it? and Why does it happen?

A You're probably trying to rename it on top of a page that already exists. This often happens if you're trying to undo a name change, because FlexWiki creates a redirect page to point to the renamed page. For example, you had page A, and then renamed it to B. As well as doing the rename, FlexWiki created a new version of page A that just contains a redirect: line pointing to B. So to undo the rename, you've first got to delete the new page A, and then rename B back to A again. The trick is how to edit A when you can't actually view it, because it immediately redirects you to B! I find the easiest thing to do is bring up B for editting, change "B" to "A" in your browser's address bar, and then hit return.

Q: How do I delete a page permanently to clean up LostAndFound

A One possibility is instead of creating new Pages renameing the old ones. Though this that the Page still has the old History.

A Do edit the page and write just delete without any staces or newline.

Q: *Keywords: Is it possible to have an alphabetical list of Keywords ?

A Try and copy the code here on this page I got from Dereks site Page not available: Aug. 25, 2005

Q: I went through the steps in QuickSetup. When I navigate to http://localhost/FlexWiki/default.aspx I get a blank page. I also get a blank page when I navigate to http://localhost/FlexWiki/admin/config.aspx . In both situations the View->Source command is disabled so I don't have a way of determining whether this is really an empty page or a page that has bad HTML. When I navigate to http://localhost/FlexWiki/default.aspx/MyWiki.HomePage I get a 404 error. Has anybody seen this behavior before? What do you think is wrong with my setup?

A The problem in my case was that asp.net was not properly installed. I got a tip to run the following command to install it, and this fixed my blank page problems:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis -i

Q: How can I generate a link in script to a topic with spaces. Usefull for automatic summary pages or generated index pages. The regular examples do not cut it.

A: Try the Presentations.Link method. I had lots of problems around spaces in topic names with scripts in pages, but this works

  [Presentations.Link(federation.LinkMaker.LinkToTopic(currentTopic.Fullname), currentTopic.Name)]

Q: I get the same problem. I'm using the newest version (2.0 beta) and the page just breaks! Is there a solution to this?

I've changed some of the code to try and get it to work but to no avail.

Anand.

Q: NEW! Love the concept of the Wiki and the ease of setup. Is it possible to create users and give certain users permissions that are managed by the admin (me). I realize this may go against the spirit and purpose of a Wiki, but at the same time I would like some control over my Wiki. Thanks in advance, Dean

Q: NEW! How do I format the text to fit within the width of the browser? In other words, how do I disable horizontal scroll bar? Thanks for your help -- Arun [2007-04-19]
