While browsing wiki, you will notice that some paragraphs have a person's name attached to the end. This is a WikiSignature: it identifies the author of that contribution. To sign a paragraph, affix two hyphen characters, then a space and your username, as is done at the end of this paragraph. -- KrisJohnson
I suggest -- Bumster[2006-20-10] you put the date of your comment in brackets for context -- MikeSchinkel [7/5/2004]
As a addendum to that suggestion, using the date format [2004-07-05] or possibly [2004-Jul-05] would be better, as Europeans don't use mm/dd/yyyy as commonly as Americans. -- CraigAndera [2004-07-05]
Great point! -- Schinkel [2004-07-05]
Can't the date be autogenerated by the system? -- sfairo [2004-07-12]
In theory, yes. However, in practice this is probably a bad idea. After all, the date and author is not relevant in all contexts. I believe that the ability to diff between two arbitrary revisions would actually be much more helpful, and would enable most of the scenarios where automatic date tagging would be handy. But if this is something you feel strongly about it, be sure to log it under SuggestedEnhancements. -- CraigAndera [2004-07-12]
Craig, in discussion thread, some concept of time is extremely important, as you seem to agree given your time stamps. When some says "I'll get to that this weekend", it would be nice to know if that was yesterday, or last year! (Which was my constant question when I first started reading here. -- MikeSchinkel [2004-07-18]
Agreed. However, I don't see an easy way for the wiki itself to automatically tell when a date should be added and when it should not. Because there are at least as many cases where it should not, then there's a problem with always adding it. Frankly, I think the wiki sucks for discussions anyway - an archived mailing list is superior in just about every respect. But lacking that, the convention we've got going here works pretty well, yes? -- CraigAndera [2004-07-19]
I actually agreed with you that it couldn't be done automatically, but wanted to echo it was still important. What might be nice would be a shorthand, ie maybe @@ts@@ or something else even shorter that the wiki processor would replace with a timestamp. -- MikeSchinkel [2004-07-19]
Interesting idea, but note that that would be a significant difference from the way FlexWiki currently works: it would mean that the wiki text as stored on disk is no longer exactly what is entered in to the edit box, because the wiki engine would have to notice the escape and replace it with a timestamp...it would be too hard otherwise to go through and figure out when each timestamp token was entered. -- CraigAndera [2004-07-23]
But doesn't the wiki do some processing already? Isn't that how it handles stuff in PascalCase? -- MarkThomas [2004-09-29]
To create a WikiSignature, just add yours for the first time and you will be taken to your WikiSignature page to start signing.
'Just add yours'? Just add your what? Just add your signature as explained above? what like this: -- MarkLay [2004-07-15]. Nope, no 'WikiSignature' page....
Am I being dumn or is this not very well explained?
A: Yes, like that, but after you do that, you see how it's underlined like WikiSignature here? You then click on that underlined link, and your homepage is created. You create a topic called "Summary:" and enter a short description of yourself. After you create your home page when you add your Signature (your name, and date) you'll have a signature like this -- WayneDawson [2004-07-25].
